distilled water is too soft by itself for use in your tank.
It must either be "reconstituted" using a mineral additive to create
"custom" water, or used in combination with your tap water to create a
suitable mix.
Distilled water is devoid off all minerals, leaving you likely to have PH
crashes and also ending up with no minerals to aid the health of plants and
fish.

Is there a test so that you can see what the water needs and if its lacking
anything, there are both natural and chemical ways to alter you water if
there are problems with it. what size tank do you have.

its a 25 gallon tank. it has white stuff all over it from the hard
water. The ph is 7.8. I am having a very hard time getting the ph down.
I put a water softener pillow in it saturday. I hope it works. |

Do you have any shells or white rocks in your tank? Those things
dissolve and add calcium to the water raising it's pH.
