I have never tried putting the (commerically avaiable) lights INSIDE
the tank, but I did build a "moonlight" out of LED's that I put in the
canopy OUTSIDE the tank. After the lights go out it gives out the
most mesmerizing blueish / purpleish hue...

I was inspired by...

and my results are...
http://www.geocities.com/mn0270100/nightlight.html

My pics are prior to any fish, substrate or rockwork in it, so it
looks kindof "spotlight" like... Up close and in person it is NOTHING
like that - I flipped the LEDS upsidedown (pointing up into the light
hood, and put reflective foil inside, so it gives off indirect light.

I love it.

Good luck!

David

Does anyone use these in their tank for colourful displays at night when the main lights turn off?

I used my pond lights one winter in my 150 gallon african tank and I could never really
get a nice look with them and the fish seemed to hate them so I pulled them out and
mounted one under my canopy with a blue filter and it finally looked nice.
A year later I got the same effect by using one of those cheapo 30" single bulb
fluorescent lights with an oceanic bulb (the one that looks like moonlight)
FYI, the pond lights give off more of a spotlight effect as opposed to the look
of the 24" fluorescent blub that looked much more real after dark

Yes I use them. They come in various colors including a red laser module. I
built a slate cave for my cichlids which uses the green and blue LED's. It
looks very nice at night.
