Fish can harbor bacterial diseases and parasites, and do, on occasion,
pass them on to other fish, so, I would at the least, isolate the sick
fish in a hospital tank. Sick fish are also picked upon by other fish
sometimes, which also adds to their stress, further debilitating them.
I always had a ten gallon tank ready for such cases. I had an air pump,
a corner filter (used for FW) placed some media in it, plus all the
other stuff, a light on a timer, a heater, some rockwork, and using the
main aquarium water, transfer the sick fish to the ten gallon.
My record was about 50/50 - half of my sick fish recovered, and half
didn't make it, but at least I gave it a try. Only when I saw a fish in
its death throes, did I put it out of its (and mine) misery.
