What is large?
I cannot find the Fluval 230 pump. Is it external? Info/link?

Turtles are in general very messy eaters, and they will leave a lot of
droppings - thus they need good filtration and frequent waterchanges.

Having too litle filtration(?)
Too small tank(?)
Overfeeding
Not changing water often enough.

Change 50% of the water, and then 25% every day for a week. That
should get you in the clear until the filter cycles properly, granting
that the filter is large enough.

IMHO You should at least have dounble the filter capasity compared to
a same size tank with fish.

I maybe posting to the wrong group but I'm getting desperate.

I have 2 new turtles (They were someone else's first) The tank they were in
was small and not deep.

I brought a large NEW tank (approximate a third bigger) also new Fluval 230
Pump.

I am having problems cycling the tank, it's been about 3 weeks and the water
is still extremely cloudy, the smell is getting bad, and there is a scum
forming on the top (like a soap scum)

What am I doing wrong?

TIA

Hi Sorry,

The Pump is an external Fluvel 205.

I'll try the 50% then 25% idea, thanks for your help

Your not providing enough information here. You neglect to say how
large the tank is, whether the fluval 230 is recommended for that size
tank given that turtles have a very high bio load, and whether you
have provided the turtles with proper "dry areas" in this new tank.
You need to make certain that the partial water changes are getting
done with regularity with any tank
