What do you do about water changes when you have city wide water
restrictions in place?

The restrictions here in Melbourne are not that bad... yet. But in the
future am i supposed to give up showering so i can do water changes or
something? People just 30min drive from the CBD have no water from the tap 5
days a week, and resort to filling up their bathtubs to get through the week
and buy water for drinking. The algae in the dam is making the water here
'unsafe' to drink directly from the tap. I wonder what implications this
could have on the fish in my tank?

Anybody else have any concerns regarding this?

That's what happens when you choose to live in a third world country.

Here in America, we leave our faucets running 24 hours a day, just to
save us the hassle of having to turn them on and off.

Id hardly call Oz a third world country... or did you just skip out on
geography classes?

In response to poster #1:
Just do less frequent water changes, it will stress your fish less and will
prevent those nasty water bills. And I highly doubt that algae will hurt the
fish - you should see my aquarium if I leave it for a few days - if algae
was a problem then the fish would all be dead by now, trust me. But its like
you said, its not a big problem as yet. Relax! Sydney is apparently doing
much worse, at least when I was there a few months ago - hotel rooms have
signs posted IN THE SHOWER asking to keep showers to a 3minute length!!! I
say who needs to shower when you have beaches 10 times better than what we
have in America!!! Grrrrr

I live in Brisbane and I found a product by Tetra Aqua called Easy Balance
and it reduces the frequency of water changes, once every 6 months.
I have put in 2 tanks and it has been in about 3 months now and the
water condition is still very good. In one tank I have a discus and a
gourami and some bottom feeders. In the other tank I have a pair of
breeding angles which are doing very well.
Hope this is of some help.

easy life and geo-liquid are both just dirt in water.
To be truthful they are mainly bentonite clay
also known as fullers earth it has a thousand uses
from cleaning up chernobyl
to clarifieing wine
myself I buy by the ton to seal dams
and by the kg in edible form from the health food shop
sure it maybe $16 a kg
but ya only need a tablespoon to make up a 2L bottle of homemade 'easy
life'
yea I know I'm a cheap
but when you have the amount of charges to look after I do
you skimp whenever pos
and if making me own easy life gets me a squid pool in me backyard quicker
then so be it......

Unsure?
leave a shot to sit
tip off liquid
and dry out clay
bentonite feels greasy
too easy Smile

Thanks to y'all for the replies!!!

I will give Easy Balance a try as i do recall the name (i think) last time i
was making a purchase of some water ager.
I have some platys, a huge beautiful Angel and some bottom feeders all in
the one tank. It gets a bit messy, particularly because the waste doesnt
pass through the sand.

Errr im a bit confused by Marion's post... is putting some sort of clay in
the aquarium beneficial?
