Our acre pond is aproaching its first spring with fish. Set up time
for fish growth and fishing.
Last year we put in 400 2" bluegill, 100 2" bass and 1000 flathead
minnows (which the bass will eat). We fed them twice daily from a
feeder. The bluegill are now 4-6". The bass will be smaller and the
flathead minnows will have reproduced a lot. Later this month we
will
add 150 2" red ears and a couple of grass carp to keep the weeds
down. The bluegill may have bred last fall, but will breed this
spring.
The drought kept the pond low last year. When it is full, its deep
zone will run from 5' to 6.5'. Last year (its first year), however,
it ran about 18" under full. The winter rains have brought it to 8"
under full now. That is a major step forward. It may actually be
full this year.
This week my granddaughter (2 yrs old) and I will have some fun
making
--- 'fish condos' : 21" lengths of 6" corrugated pipe stacked in
layers of 3 with layers alternating East/West and North/South. Brim
and bass like to hang out in the cavities.
--- -'trees' : 3' trunks of 4" PVC with 3' branches of 1" or 1.5"
PVC
through them. The fish like to hang out in the space between the
branches.
They will be anchored in cement and strategically placed for fishing
from the dock and from the shore.
Should be fun. I will try to post some pics.
