What sort of Roman coins? I've got a 1st century Nero as,
not particularly valuable, probably provincial, paid < $75.
I wouldn't dream of putting it in an aquarium for fear of
ruining the coin. The alloys used weren't the purest, and
for pity sake, it's 2000 years old! Mine's quite fragile --
a fingerprint can result in a bloom of corrosion.
If yours are that old, I'd not do it. The fish won't care.
As to what it will do to the water, who knows?
W/r/t modern coins, dunno. Probably OK -- I have some brass
airline fittings underwater that have about the same mass as
a coin, and they seem OK.
