I have started a saltwater aquarium, and have a Penguin 280 filter. I
bought a bottle of Diamond Blend (activated carbon & ammonia fighting
crystals) to put into the extra filter. On the label of the Diamond Blend I
just noticed it says for "freshwater only". Anyone got any thoughts of why
this is so and if it is safe to use it in saltwater?

It contains a resin which absorbs ammonia in freshwater. It doesn't work in
saltwater, an it may release chemicals harmful to your invertebrates or
chemicals which encourage the growth of algae.

Yup. Limnophile is correct. Zeolite absorbs ammonia in freshwater and
recharges if you put it in saltwater - it releases the ammonia and whatever
else it is holding.
