Yesterday when I entered the room my aquarium is in it had an electrical
burn kind of smell. I checked out the aquarium and fish. Things seemed ok.
When I touched the tank I use for a sump I got a small electrical shock. I
turned everything off and pulled the powerheads out. I thought I figured
out which one was the problem. I started things up again...no shock. I
thought I was set. Late last night I noticed the waer was cloudy. Thought
maybe I just stirred things up. This morning, same smell. Same cloudy
water. But several dead fish. Mushrooms seem to not like it either. Now
I'm trying about a 30 to 40% water change. I,m guessing a powerhead leaked.
Not sure though. Thoughts? Suggestions? Sympathy?

Yup. RIO 2100. It's dead as a doornail now. I have a RIO 3100 for the
return. I'm not sure if I should keep using it just in case it's actually
the culprit. Hate to just toss it. The water fogged up after I pulled the
2100 out. But the timing was close so I'm just not sure.

EVERYONE -- PLEASE NOTE: The Rio 2100 and 2500 are the most dangerous pumps to
use, as they are infamous for destroying a tank.

John, you can still use your 3100 if you like. It doesn't have the same history
with hobbyists. Myself, I have both a 2100 and a 2500 sitting in the garage. I
use them only for mixing new saltwater, or to pump water during a water change.
I do not trust them in my tanks.

Sorry to hear your tank is in trouble. You better run a lot of carbon, and
change a huge amount of water.

Marc

Btw, I'd suggest the Mag Drive as an excellent replacement. Check Marine Depot:
