I have a rather large outdoor water garden and am interested in
keeping cichlids, specifically oscars in the pond. I have been told
it is nearly impossible to maintain the ideal water quality for these
types of fish in an outdoor setting. I live in Pensacola, FL and the
average temperature in the winter is around 45 degrees with a limited
opportunity for freezing temps. Has ne1 ever attempted this or know o
ne1 whom has? All advice and comments will be welcomed. Thanks.

45 F would be too cold for an Oscar. Goldfish would be fine. I have some
really large Goldfish that are a lot of fun kept in a large pond.

Hi. I wouldn't try it -- i think the temperature fluxuations would
overstress and kill the Oscar. In a home aquarium, if the temp drops
below around 75F, they begin to show signs of stress. Perhaps someone
else has a suggestion for a Cichlid that would fare better -- maybe
the Texas Cichlid, which occurs naturally in the Rio Grande where
temps can dip also. --Mark
