Have set up my first tank for a while, last one I had was a small one when I
was 14!
One I have now is 15g, EHEIM 2208, Visitherm 100W. Rinsed tank out last
night, spent about 45 min thoroughly washing gravel, filled with water,
turned on EHEIM, left for one hour for heater to acclimatise, then turned it
up to 82. Would like to do a fishless cycle.
I understand I can use a conditioner to remove chlorine (the LFS where I got
the gravel told me it was chlorine not chloramine added), but I thought it
would evaporate in a few hours anyway. So far it's been 20 hours, tank has
reached temperature, but it still smells like a swimming pool. There is a
lot of surface aeration, as I angled the EHEIM upwards so I get a jet out of
the water and a nice splashy noise. Don't know how much longer I should
leave it before adding ammonia for the cycle.
Should I just add conditioner or leave it a little longer?

just add the conditioner, its easy and quick. a brand i use is Jungle Start
Right, it removes chlorine and chloramines and it works immediatly. it also
neutralizes harmful metals and stimulates fish slime coat naturally and adds
beneficial electrolytes. i use it for my siamese fighting fish (14 of em),
my 30 gallon tank with various tropicals and my 5 gallon tank and my 10
gallon newt tank. i use springwater just cuz no ammount of chemicals or
anything will make our tap water safe for drinking or livin in and despite
it being spring water i still use the start right.

However, I'll need a conditioner that does chlorine only, as I'm going to be
dosing my tank with ammonia for the fishless cycle. I was rather wondering
how long it would take to aerate the chlorine out of the water. A day? Two?
A week?

I've done fishless cycling and always used conditioner - never occurred
to me not to. It didn't make much difference at all to the cycling and
the water didn't stink like a swimming pool!

You can use StressCoat during fishless cycling.
I did and it worked fine. I did seed the tank
with gravel & filter media & decorations from
an established tank, thought.
