OK, I joined. But it seems to me we're giving in to the trolls (aka
Roy) a little too easily. I've managed to filter out most of the
offensive posts so I'll continue to check this group from time to time.

Due to users beyond our control, a group of regulars from
rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc created and moved to: 'The Freshwater
Aquarium'. http://groups.google.com/group/The-Freshwater-Aquarium
This is a 'lightly' moderated group, by members who volunteer to act as
its managers. They watch for, and delete any posts which are SPAM,
grossly inappropriate, or of an antisocial behaviour as has been seen in
the Usenet groups lately.
We also have members and managers from alt.aquaria,
alt.aquaria.tropical.fish.hobbist, rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants and
rec.ponds.
This group is open to anyone (new or old to the hobby) interested in
discussions regarding freshwater animals (fish, shrimps, snails etc),
plants and the operation of their set-ups (lighting, filters etc). The
Google interface is a little different, but the company is great.

No..You haven't lost to the trolls. You simply made a wise decision not
to support a usenet that allows trolls to wreak havoc, evading identities
and responsibilities for their actions. Usenet technology is dead
anyway. It's needed a total revamp for years now.
Congradulations are in order, I believe.

I think the troll has won for now. I like the easy exchange of the
newsgroup. I don't like having to sign in to a google site.
I am amazed that the troll/s have so much energy to create so much
garbage. There are hundreds of post over several newsgroups daily.
I will continue to sort through the trash to reply to on topic posts
if I have anything to say.

I think they see that as better than being verbally abused constantly.

School is out in many areas so the bored teenagers are online looking for
fun. Then we have those on SSD and SSI who need something to fill their
endless empty days. Trolling Usenet fits the bill and gets them a lot of
attention.

If we'd all try and ignore them like they do on some of the other NGs
they've invaded these groups can and will survive.
Getting back to fish. I have an AC filter that sounds like a cement mixer.
No matter what I've tried the darn thing make so much noise you can hear it
1/2 way across the house at night. I can hear it now as I type this,
grinding away. This is the first AC that's done this. I may just toss it
although it's only 3 years old.

Just so you know, you can set the Google group up to get messages by
email, listserv style. There's also an RSS feed.
I do miss my newsreader but I flatly refuse to tolerate the group of
lunatics that have moved in.

This all seems like deja vu to me, first trolls invade a news group, then a
group is started on a site off Usenet.
What's to stop what I've seen in other Usenet groups that have done this,
next trolls invade the group using, free signup email accounts, changing
accounts when they get discovered or mail bombing the group so moderation is
impossible?
Also using Usenet you don't have to use a real email address to post,
whereas Google group you have to have a email address, what's to stop
someone sitting in there and harvesting all the email addresses.
Why don't we just hop straight to the last stage that's happened on other
groups, a proportion of the trolls get kicked off what ever studies their
doing for wasting so much time on Usenet and end up working at Burger King
or MacDonalds, (or if a miracle occurs actually finish their studies) the
unemployed lot get their pc's reclaimed by the repo man and kicked out of
libraries and finally the last lot get bored and decide to move on to
another group.
