Hello,
Here the setup:
50 gallons aquarium using sea water (salt)
Start last November using sea water as base and addition of marine salt to
get proper level
Use beach sand and rock for decoration
Only 3 fish as been introduce (Blue Dansel)
Back to a windows, but window face cover to prevent light from getting in
Only room lightning at first
Temperature at 25c
Here the problems:
As been OK until mid march, next appear brown algae, mostly in the morning,
so we add artificial lightning using one Metal Halide 175watt lamp. Brown
algae still there in the morning but clean a bit during day (linghning), but
never dissapear.
Now appear green fungus, look like algae, but are probably bacteria. Now
everything is cover with that green and its worse since we add lightning.
We try to cover the aquarium for 4 days (no light at all) to get rid of the
green bacteria, most of it die, but we still have a greenish water and thing
have begin to recover with the green bacteria after we remove the cover.
Every water parameters are inside norme.
Any help to solve the problem will be welcome.
Bye
Jacques

Do you have good filtration and 'live rock' to help filter out the bad
stuff?
Just a suggestion.

Yes filtration is good, but no live rock. I was waiting to get a stable
environment before introducing any live thing, another snail die today.

I have had a 75 gallon saltwater aquarium for years...I am no expert, but,
my fish are doing fine so, I must be doing something right. I NEVER use
chemicals...I feed often..(not suggested, but, I have healthy - happy fish).
I feed them frozen brine, krill, frozen blood worms, Omega 1 & 2 formula
pellets. I keep salt level between 1.020 and 1.025. I have a large 6-7" Naso
Tang, two large yellow tangs, one large scopis (sp?) tang, a large Hawkfish,
1 lawnmower blennie, 1 engineer gobbie (12-14" long) 2 med. cardinals, 2
small cardinals, 1 bi-color angel, 1 other angel...I forget its name dark
blue and red, beauty something I think. One large sifting sand star, 1
cleaner shrimp, 2 large hermit crabs, - I think that's all... lol
I only do small water changes, about once a month - 1- 15 gallons. Less
shock to the fish. I have a protein skimmer...I think is absolutely
necessary..some don't. I tried a refugium, but it was more trouble than it
was worth...took it apart a few weeks ago.Yes, I have lost fish...but, let
me tell you why...from my experience. First of all...a friend put in 2 kinds
of chemicals..he said they were for ich...I don't think the fish had
it...The next morning almost all were dead!!! I saved a few...Then I
overloaded the tank with too many fish..I went crazy at the aquarium shop.
Needless to say, many of them died..Now the tank is stable. I have learned
lessons the hard way. But, I keep on keeping on. My fish are more than just
fish..they're my pets. Not that I need any more pets..I have 7 rescued cats
and dogs, a Koi pond (haven't lost a one of them either..16 fat healthy
Koi). Three years in August.
I also have a 100 gallon cichlid tank.
More later, Lois

Hi Lois,
I have a 75 gallon freshwater tank plus a 29 and 3 ten gallon tanks.
Like you I don't trust chemicals and through an error killed several
of my fish. I don't even use charcoal. I change the filters when the
water is bypassing them. All of my tanks have live "low light" plants.
I do 20% water changes twice weekly using a Python on the 29 and 75
gallon tanks. I am lucky I can use the water straight from the kitchen
sink where I adjust the temperature by the feel to my fingers. I feed
my fish twice daily and only feed flake food. I don't have protein
skimmer, but it doesn't appear to be a problem after 4 years.
Simple procedure for a simple person. I think many people enjoy
getting their water and food "right", but may not realize they don't
have to do all they are doing. If their community water is not a
danger to the fish, "fishing" can be simple.
