According to my book on South American eartheaters, the current name of
Geophagus jurupari appears to be Satanoperca jurupari. The fish you
mention is a different species, but very similar.

My book states that leucosticta (as opposed to jurupari) are prone to
skin lesions and hard water or water with pH above 7.5 should be avoided.
They also recommend wood, stones, and, of course, a fine sandy substrate
-- plus keeping a small group of fish -- a commonly overlooked
desideratum for eartheaters. They recommend the addition of leaves for
breeding purposes -- you might want to purchase the book if you are
really interested in breeding them. (" South American Eartheaters" by
Thomas Weidner).

It would probably depend upon the Oscar. Satanoperca are generally
pretty poor at defending themselves, so an aggressive Oscar would pose
problems.

Hi all. This is a multi-questioned post.

I'm looking for some info on Satanoperca leucostica formerly (Geophagus
jurupari).
I can't seem to find much online.
What are the water paramters, temp etc.
Breeding habits
Would they be compatible with oscars

The tank is a 6' x 2' x 18" has 3 oscars at about 10cm and a pleco a little
bit smaller. I asked earlier about other tankmates and took all those
suggestions onboard, but while looking for some of them (choice is limited
here), I stumbled across some Satanoperca leucostica and would like to keep
them (if not in the same tank, a seperate set-up).

Also I would like to know if it's possible to add some bristlenose cats to
the tank? Will the pleco harass and kill the bristlenose, or will the oscars
think they're a nice snack?

One last question does anyone know of a good site in Australia that sells
fish online, as I'm in a rural area and aquarium shops are limited here,
especially as I'm originally from the city where there was a lot of choice.
Thanks

Hi Loz,

Not sure about the geo.Jurupari and the oscar but what Mephistopheles says
is about right for them. There are a number of Jurupari sp. so be careful
whem buying.
Conserning the bristlenoses, be very careful, they will get on fine with the
oscars and the plec wouldn't bother it I think. This said, don't get two
males, they will kill each other so if you buy two be sure that you have a
male and female.
If it's the doradoras cats you want, any of the armoured cats get on fine
with oscars and you have a number to choose from.

My experience with Satanoperca and some of the other Geophagines has been
enjoyable although I made a fair number of mistakes at first. For a cichlid
they are not very aggressive but are quite capable of defending their nest.
They will seldom be observed eating or killing another live fish but it can
happen. I do keep pairs but usually like to have them in groups of at least
6 and I have kept different species in the same tank without any problems.

The biggest problem I had was with the water. I currently have Satanoperca
Acuticeps together with Geo. Altifrons, Temporalis, Rams, and Biotidoma
Cupido, and the Acuticeps start getting hole-in-head if the water ph gets
above 7.0 or if I don't change the water often enough. The water changes,
or lack of, seem to be the worse of the two. I keep the water fairly stable
at a ph of 6.5 by mixing RO and tapwater and keeping large pieces of
driftwood in the tank. With just plain RO water the ph would crash in a
very short time and once dropped well below 4.0 in just a few days. I would
like to try and maintain a ph of 5.5 but I haven't worked out the correct RO
to tapwater ratio yet. I have been told that to get these to spawn with
success, a ph of 4.5 to 5.0 works the best but that is only what I have been
told and have not tried it yet.

I like Oscars and I like Geo's, but I will never keep them in the same tank.
I won't say that it can't be done because I've never tried it. Oscars like
to keep things stirred up and throw stuff around the tank. It's part of
what makes them fun. With the type of sand or mud substrate that the
Satanoperca like, I could see the Oscar making the tank a cloudy mess
whenever it feels like playing.

I am not an expert so don't take my words as gospel.
