Hi,
I have designed a tank which is 24x24x15 (high), the MH is place
roughtly 12~13 inch above the water surface. Is this too far? I am a
bit concern that there won't be enough light. By the way the MH is
150W 10000k and I am putting another 55w PC for blues, is this enough?

i used to have mine about 3 inches off the water, and i too burnt my arm. i
would say 2nd degree burn, i have a scar about the size of a 50 cent piece
on my forearm for a reminder. of course all my fault and they are so hot it
doesnt hurt till after the fact. that was when i was using a prebuilt
all-glass hood. i have since built my own custom hoom for my 55. 2 175 mh
and 2 20watt flor for blues. bulbs now about 8 inches from water. although
i will say i never had a problem with them 3 inches off the water but had to
clean them off from salt spray every few months. (tiny bubbles poopping
overtime add up)

Ouch. Who knew that keeping a fish tank was so hazardous?

I keep a 400w over a grow out tank that is adjusted between 3" and 20"
depending on how new and accustomed to light the current occupants are I
have never had any ill effects from it at any distance.
over my 29 reef I kept a 400w @ 8" the heat transfer is allot higher when
its down close to the water so controlled ventilation is a must have. as
for the salt creep on the bulbs as some others have mentioned I never have
had a great deal of it at any distance, I guess the 400's are so hot they
keep it from making it to them before its vaporized or they burn it off
after the fact.
YMMV
