Why can some Pacific salt water fish live in fresh water?

Why Coho and king salmon live in freshwater inland lakes (Great Lakes, for example) when they are Pacific fish with salt water. I understand salmon can not.

There is a difference in salinity between the Atlantic and Pacific. This is the reason, one species can not survive in other ocean. The Atlantic has more salt. There are lobsters in both oceans, but they are completely different varieties.

The Guide's Forecast: Nov. 24-30

The McKenzie River has been fishing well, providing some dry fly action afternoons but as with other valley rivers, it is rapidly rising. Willamette Valley/Metro: Anglers fishing the mainstem Columbia have been put off by dropping catch rates and inclement weather. As water temperatures on the Willamette drop to the mid-40s, level and flow will be increasing over the coming week and beyond as it will be slower to react and recover from the storm. Keepers should remain available in the Portland to Longview stretch but will be challenging to come by. Waters adjacent to the mouth of the Willamette are also a fair option. Sandy and Clackamas rivers will be unfishable and won’t be recovering until sometime next week. Neither is expected to improve although anglers may find varying degrees of success pursuing catch and release sturgeon opportunities in the Bonneville Pool. There isn’t much Through Wednesday.

Considering Saltwater, looking for opinions/advice - Aquarium Forum

We just aquired a large (well, large to me) 33 gallon tank along with a boatload of accessories, water treatments, food, "hospital tank", I had a smallish (15 gallon, I believe) freshwater tank many years ago that I kept up for several years, so I have experience there, but I know next to nothing about saltwater tanks.
