Not only is it dirt cheap, but it doesn't leave a yellow residue behind
and it appears to last longer (no evidence, just subjective). I go for
months between washing out my containers.
I've also seen it at wal-mart in the fall, but at this time of year, you
may need to order it.

And you are using RO water, and not aerating the
lime water, right?
I found a really good source directly from a
manufacture here in Florida. I used to sell it in
the store. Just for the fun of it, I sold it real
cheap. I sold it for a $1.00 a bag. Then when people
would see it and ask what it was, I'd say "It's a
dollar bag".
Hmm, maybe I should start buying it again, and
auction it off on ebay.

You say that you are using the same water, but if
you are using tap water, that changes.
Dry calcium hydroxide will loose it's strength by
absorbing CO2. It's best for long time storage, that
you store it in an air tight container. A bag is
fine for short term storage. If storing in a bag,
double bagging and triple bagging helps.

Happy New Year,
Does anyone have a preferred kalkwasser mix (for those that use one). I'm
currently using Kent Marine, but I've noticed a lot more precipitate in the
mix lately, using the same proportions of water / powder. Anyone have any
experience with any other brands?
Thanks - Patrick |

Thanks Kurt, I never tried using the pickling lime before. I've read about
others' good results with it, but never tried it myself, I'll give it a
shot.

Thanks Wayne, I'm not mixing anything different lately (same kind of water,
etc) and do not aerate it, it just sits in a closed pitcher until ready to
be dripped. For some reason it's not mixing like it used to though. Is it
possible that I have a "bad batch" of the powder (it is a new container of
mix) or that if the water is not kept at the usual temp could that effect
it? During the warmer months (I'm in NJ) I just let it sit on the kitchen
counter (ambient room temp around 75, in the winter ambient room temp is
around 70).

Wayne, I am using RO water. The mixture sits in an airtight pitcher (one of
the old type screw-on lid lemonade pitchers) with a lid on and only gets
opened when I need to fill up my drip-dose container. It just seems that
this only started to happen after I received the new container of Kent's
product that's why I was wondering if it could be a bad batch (don't know if
that's even possible though). Thanks for any suggestions,
Patrick

You can mix it with RO/DI water for make up water. In solution, it
creates Calcium hydroxide, so it replenishes Ca+ ions. As it's very
basic, it's best to drip it in using a drip gate or using a top off
device or mix it with the effluent from a calcium reactor.
It will help your coralline grow if you have it. It will also react
with phosphate and participate out of solution, so it keeps the
phosphate under control as well. When I was dealing with hair algae, it
really helped knock back the growth.

I have Coralline and its doing fine, I don't have any issues with
phosphates or algae. Is there another benefit to using it? |

I like to think that it prevents cavities as I setup the siphon before
bedtime. (Yes, I'm kidding.)

Does it also prevent global warming? (Kidding)
