I had 2m and 2f guppies, first in my 10g as a quarantine, and then separated
in the 5g tanks. Shortly after I moved them, I noticed what appeared to be
Ich on the biggest female. She seemed fine, but the smaller one was
hovering at the top of the tank, and not looking well. I treated with Quick
Cure, all I had; 1 drop per gallon. About an hour later, the larger female
was dead. The smaller one succumbed a few hours after that. Oddly enough,
both males are still fine. Not a mark or spot on them, and swimming around
normally. They are now in the same tank. I treated both tanks since Ich
doesn't stay on the fish continuously.
If I was Ich, I may have just not noticed it when I brought them home. I
was thinking they may have gotten it from the plants, but I wouldn't be able
to see it within a few hours, would I? I would think I just didn't notice
until I moved them ... maybe different lighting. Oh, btw, when I said the
fish were separated, I meant 1m and 1f per tank.
Could it have been something else? Looked like "grains of salt" which is
how the gf books describe it, on tail and a few on fins. Why only the
females?

It depends on how the fish deals with the stress. It sure sounds like they
had ich. I think I would have tried a bit of Aquarium salt and turned up
the heater a bit ( to 82f I believe, check the FAQ posting ). However
sometimes there is no gaurentee for these actually quite delicate critters
and they may have succumbed to their illness eithier way. I have noticed
that if my tanks pH is high my guppies don't fair very well a end up sickly
and die very quickly...

My pH is around 7.5 normally, which is great for my goldfish. Is this high
for guppies? Temp in tank is 76 or so. No heater, but is only 5g's and
stays warm. I keep an eye on it. I think the one female was weak to begin
with, but the bigger one seemed fine, other than the males were chasing her
alot. I want to get a few more females when I take these ones back - I mean
a few extra, on top of the replacements, and another male or 2 for my other
tank as well. We'll see.

They should be fine in that pH level, thats pretty close to what I have for
well water here, and mine do fine.. In fact my tetras do fine there as
well... Could have been and most likely was, stress related..
