Are sumps, protein skimmers, and all that other sophisticated stuff ever
used in freshwater or is that science only relegated to saltwater.
Why I am asking is if a person has a 200 gal freshwater tank what would be
the most optimal way to filter it.
One more thing...I have this crazy looking snail/slug(it has a shell) that
came in with one of my live rocks some time ago and I want to know what it
is. It has down some really bizarre things.
Does anybody have a good link to a fish/snail site? But not that great
slug/nudibranch site...If anyone would like, I can do my best to describe
this thing.
Thanks,

Sumps are great for freshwater. You can keep heaters, carbon, ph probes
and just the extra volumn is a plus. My opinion on protein skimmers in
freshwater is they don't work. Whether its the high ph or the salinity
in a salt tank that makes it foam, it doesn't in freshwater. Some people
swear by them, I don't

Bio balls, water changes, and my favorite aquaclear filters.

Skimmers don't work in freshwater because you can't get fine enough bubbles in
freshwater as you do in saltwater. The salinity has a major effect on the foam
output.
Wet/dry's are used on Freshwater, right Brian?
I'll hazard a guess on your wierd snail being a stomatella. Sight unseen.

You bet, never ever on saltwater. Let the live rock do the boi thing

Many people use this type of filter without knowing it. Such as
Hornswort in a sump. (Hornswort grows so well it is considered a
noxious weed in many parts of North America.)

Saltwater supports a far greater diversity of life then fresh. Both LR
and DSB depend somewhat on this diversity. This makes LR and DSB
harder to setup in FW tanks. Most freshwater tanks, rivers, and lakes
are incredibly sterile compared to even FOWLR. Plants are easier to
setup and maintain and achieve the same results in FW, as LR+DSB in
SW. Plants will actually pull ammonia right out of the water. |

algae: something you dont want, cant get rid of, and cant control.
plants: something you want, and cant grow.
seems like it fits doesnt it?
