Okay, I am wanting to start a frontosa tank.
I am planning on buying a 50 gal. breeding tank this week. How long will 8
fronts manage in a 50 gal? With 8 in a tank, will there be enough in a 50
without there being an aggression/territorial problem? I had a huge problem
with other cichlids killing eachother--my first Mpimbwe was killed because I
only had 8 fish in a 20 gallon. At least that's what the petshop owner told
me. I have to figure out this ratio.

The article in Frontosa Corner says:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/c_frontosa.php
"If you're growing your Fronts up, the "best" method is to acquire 12-15
individuals (all unrelated and from the same race) and put them in a tank of
their own."

12-15 seems like a lot. Does this seem right to you? Can I get away with 8
in a 50?

Thanks again,
-Muuurgh

Once the fronts grow up or get to about 4-6 inches in length, you'll be hard
pressed to keep even two in a 50. I'd recommend nothing smaller than a six
foot tank for fronts. If the tank is large enough, you can get away with
keeping two males together, but in a 50 gallon tank, you'll end up with one
male alive and one dead when it's all said and done. The remaining male
won't tolerate a female in his territory when they're not actually breeding.
And each female will want their own little space. If you have 8 1" fry,
they'll be fine in a 50 gallon for about a year.
