The citys planning and zoning Board and the city commission are evaluating whether Fort Lauderdale, where chickens were outlawed back in 1954, should allow a maximum of eight chickens on any property within the city. I offer this tale of cohabitation and survival in the urban jungle to advocate a sensible point of view to people like me uncomfortable in the company of feisty feathered friends: Let there be chickens in Fort Lauderdale. Chickens are no more dangerous than the roaming ducks or geese in lakeside communities, and are a lot safer than those unleashed and wandering pit bulls, a breed allowed in Broward County. No roosters are being considered (and I can understand why, given my experience, but besides that, roosters are noisy and arent needed for hens to produce eggs). A few chickens clucking are no more obnoxious than a barking dog, a squawking raven or a roaming neighbors cat silently doing his business on your expensive cushioned patio furniture.
